San Diego Padres Suffer Injury Blow

The San Diego Padres have been hit with another injury to their bullpen, as Jason Adam has landed on the 15-day injured list with a shoulder strain.

What happened?

Adam's injury surfaced while throwing before Wednesday's game in Chicago, and he will now undergo an MRI on his achy right shoulder.

The Padres have activated right-hander Germán Márquez from the injured list to take Adam's place on the active roster.

Why it matters for San Diego Padres

The loss of Adam puts even more pressure on left-hander Adrian Morejón and closer Mason Miller to get the job done, with the team currently on a L5 streak and standing 9th in the National League with a 43-42 record.

The Padres are coming off a tough loss, having been beaten 23-3 by the Chicago Cubs on July 1, 2026.

What comes next?

The Padres will look to bounce back from their recent losses when they face the Los Angeles Dodgers on July 3, 2026.

Germán Márquez, who had been working as a starter, will now take on a new role in the bullpen, having made his MLB debut as a reliever in September 2016.

Márquez had a 5.76 ERA in 29⅔ innings to begin the year in the Padres' rotation before landing on the injured list with forearm nerve inflammation.

The Padres' bullpen, which has the fifth-best ERA in the majors at 3.56, will need to step up in Adam's absence, with rookie right-hander Bradgley Rodriguez and left-handers Wandy Peralta and Yuki Matsui looking to make an impact.

Adrian Morejón, who has a 3.32 ERA, will be key to the Padres' success, along with Mason Miller, who has a 0.78 ERA and has been reliable as the team's closer.

The Padres' manager, Craig Stammen, said that Adam's injury was not a major concern, but the team decided to err on the side of caution and put him on the injured list.

Stammen also expressed hope that Adam's injury would not be a long-term one and that he would be back helping the bullpen soon.

The Padres will need all hands on deck as they look to turn their season around and make a push for the playoffs.
