San Diego Padres Struggle with Roster Risks

The San Diego Padres are 42-37, having won 5-2 vs Atlanta Braves on 2026-06-25, and are currently on a W3 streak.

What's going wrong for the Padres?

The Padres' offseason roster additions have not delivered enough value in 2026, with a bottom-five offense in most major categories.

They have one of the thinnest rotations, a -8 run differential, and are 17-21 against teams above .500.

Can the rotation improve?

The team landed Michael King in free agency, but other low-risk signings have not hit, including Griffin Canning, who has a 7.38 ERA in 10 appearances.

Lucas Giolito has also struggled, posting a 5.16 ERA and 1.85 WHIP, and is now on the 15-day injured list with elbow inflammation.

What about the lineup?

The Padres attempted to address their lack of right-handed power, but Nick Castellanos hit .189 in 39 games before being designated for assignment.

Manager Craig Stammen has stuck with struggling stars at the top of the lineup, including Jackson Merrill and Manny Machado.

Merrill has yet to get back to his rookie-year production, batting .215 with a .615 OPS.

What's next for the Padres?

The Padres are tied with the Cubs for the final wild-card spot, but the holes in the roster are becoming harder to ignore.

With a 7th place standing in the National League, the Padres need to find consistency in their lineup and rotation to make a push for the playoffs.

The only rotation piece that has worked out is Walker Buehler, who owns a 2.76 ERA with 36 strikeouts in his last eight starts.
