The San Diego Padres signed Franklin High graduate Ryan Gerety as a free agent after the 2026 MLB draft, adding a dynamic outfielder who led Northeastern University with 20 doubles and 20 stolen bases this season. The Padres, currently 10th in the National League with a 48-48 record, are on a two-game win streak after beating the Toronto Blue Jays 5-4 on July 12.
Gerety, a first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) selection, hit .326 for Northeastern this year. His walk-off single in the ninth inning secured a 3-2 win over Campbell, helping the Huskies repeat as CAA champions. The Franklin native also played for the Harwich Mariners in the Cape Cod Baseball League this summer, recording eight hits and eight steals in 17 games.
The Padres see potential in Gerety’s speed and contact hitting. His ability to steal bases and drive in runs fits their need for offensive versatility. Gerety, who had one year of eligibility left at Northeastern, chose to turn pro, calling it 'a dream come true.' He’ll likely report to Arizona to begin his minor league career.
Gerety said he’s eager to 'get to the next level and get back into the trenches.' The Padres, who have struggled with consistency this season, hope Gerety can develop into a reliable outfielder. His signing comes as the team looks to build depth ahead of the trade deadline.
